It's 9:47. Is it safe to turn the lights back on?

You see all kinds. Especially on Halloween.

We took the kids to Trunk-or-Treat at the church tonight. The kids had a great time, what with the costumes and candy and friends and grandparents.

Wife and I had a really nice time, too.

Here are a couple mysteries I wasn't able to solve tonight. Maybe you can help:
  1. You're a mom. You're downtown. On Halloween. Walking down the street and through a parking lot. Do you wear shoes? Or just red socks?
  2. We spotted a girl dressed as a French maid and one as a Pl*yb*y bunny. Both were under 16. Since when is that appropriate?
Like I said, you see all kinds. But that's one of the cool things about our Trunk-or-Treat - it's an event for our church members and the surrounding neighborhood. Our Children's Ministry Leader put the whole thing together with the help of a small army volunteers, and she did a great job.

If you're reading, Children's Ministry Leader, great job!

We left all the lights out at the house while we were gone so that the neighborhood kids wouldn't be disappointed by ringing our doorbell with no response.

I insisted that we leave them off even after returning, and we worked as stealthily as possible to get the kids in bed without offering any evidence of human life to anyone outside.

At 7:45, just after I finished Daughter's nighttime routine, the doorbell rang. Despite the fact that our house looks big and spooky on a regular night, much less with every light (including outside lights) turned off, some determined (or intoxicated) child still mustered up the resolve to come ring our doorbell.

I didn't go to the door, but I've got to give the kid credit for being goal-driven in the face of adversity.

Got any good stories to share from this Halloween?

Last year I took my nephew downtown for the trick or treating at the businesses. This year he is out of town, so we didn't go. I am SO GLAD we didn't. My sister works downtown, and she was getting off of work about the time we would have been there for trick or treating. She said she never saw so many YOUNG girls/children dressed as hookers in her life. It is so sad, really. :-( What are parents thinking?! Next year, we are just going straight to the Church Fall Festival.

Living in a rural subdivision we normally don't get but 20 or so trick or treaters, and we're usually a little disappointed. This year we had more than 100. Three different hay wagons lit up with orange lights and full of kids came through the neighborhood. All of our trick or treaters were nice and all were dressed appropriately. It reminded me of what Halloween was like when I was a kid.

That sounds fun. And, in answer to your questions:

1. I'd never wear just socks out on the street or through a parking lot. Halloween or not. Unless the costume was person-who-doesn't-own-shoes-and-wants-to-step-on-something-gross-or-dangerous.

2. It's still not appropriate. I've got to wonder if these girls' parents saw the costumes and thought they were okay.

No good stories at the quick, but I would like to make the point that the "signals" for trick or treating have not been enforced over the years. We had our lights out, the door closed and we gave every clue that said, "Don't come here because WE'RE NOT HERE! (but we had a friend waiting in our house for us to return), but he said the kids rang and knocked for minutes on end until he finally had to go to the door to tell them to beat it. This was at 7 PM when the elementary school age kids were out.

Where are the parents in this venture and why aren't they teaching politeness and courtesy as the kids are asking for sweets?

And it's never appropriate, but that's because we believe in a little thing called modesty and decency...

SO what are you saying? The dominatrix get-up for our three year old was over the top?

The good news, it was a little big on her, so it SHOULD fit next year.
